The First State Examination in Law (EJP) consists of the compulsory state examination (= First State Examination in Law, EJS), which is conducted by the State Judicial Examination Office, and the university specialization examination (= University Examination in Law, JUP) to be taken at the respective university.
There are two examination dates per year for the First State Examination in Law (compulsory state examination). Students who wish to take the examination must register for it.
Students who register for the First State Examination in Law must have taken part in an advanced exercise in civil law, criminal law and public law and provide proof of this.
In addition, they must take part in a foreign-language law course or a law-related language course and provide proof of this ("foreign language certificate").
In addition, three months of practical study time must be completed.
Please compile the documents in the following order in a PDF file and upload them at the end of the application process via the electronic application portal (see "Online procedure").
Registration for the First State Examination in Law is only possible via the electronic registration portal (see "Online procedure").
To register for the examination, you need a BayernID user account. It is sufficient to register with a user name and password; higher security levels are of course also accepted.
Please compile all the necessary documents in a PDF file and upload them in the upload area during the registration process. If you are unable to submit all the necessary documents with your registration, please send the missing documents to the e-mail address pruefungsamt@stmj.bayern.de no later than three working days after the end of the lecture period for the current semester.
Once you have successfully completed the online registration process, you will receive confirmation of your registration by e-mail. If you have agreed to the notification of notifications in the BayernID mailbox, the decision on admission will be sent electronically. If you have not agreed to this, the decision on admission will be communicated in writing.
Please note that from the examination date 2026/1 (start of registration October 1, 2025), the invitation to the oral examination together with notification of the examination board and the individual grades of the written examination can also be sent electronically via the user account for the first time. As part of a pilot project, the summons will be sent in electronic form in addition to the previous postal dispatch. This is only possible if you consent to the electronic notification of notifications in the registration form. This consent is voluntary. If you do not open the electronic feedback channel, you will only receive the summons by post.
The publication of the overall result of the written part of the examination and the day of the oral examination using the previously communicated result code on the website of the State Judicial Examination Office on the day of the announcement of grades remains unaffected by this.
A fee will be introduced for repeating the First State Examination in Law to improve grades. Payment of the grade improvement fee(350 euros for the First State Examination in Law) will be a prerequisite for admission to the grade improvement attempt from the 2026/2 examination date. Further information on how to pay the fee will be made available here in good time.
