The district administrative authorities (district administrations, independent cities) are responsible for monitoring public pharmacies under pharmaceutical and pharmacy law. They make use of honorary pharmacists for this purpose.
Honorary pharmacists are appointed by the governments of Upper Bavaria and Upper Franconia. They are responsible for the inspection and monitoring of public pharmacies.
Pharmacies are generally inspected every two years. During the inspection, the honorary pharmacy inspector checks whether the pharmacy is being operated properly, in particular in accordance with the regulations on pharmacy, the trade in medicinal products and the trade in hazardous substances, and whether the regulations on advertising in the field of medicine are being observed.
