An official certificate of competence issued by one of the countries bordering Lake Constance, but which is not valid for Lake Constance, can be recognized for a limited period upon request.
Anyone who does not have a Lake Constance skipper's license can obtain a temporary vacation or vacation skipper's license (temporary Lake Constance skipper's license) to operate a boat on Lake Constance. It is valid for 30 days at a time within a calendar year and is only issued once a year.

The fees for the Lake Constance skipper's license are set by the Lindau (Lake Constance) District Office. The fee for recognition is 12.50 euros.

The processing time depends on the individual case and is usually completed within one week.
The Lake Constance boatmaster's license can be issued if the theoretical examination and the practical examination have been successfully passed or proven. A replacement copy can be applied for if the patent has been lost.
Motorboats and motor vessels on Lake Constance must be registered. Sailing boats without a motor, paddle boats and rowing boats that are longer than 2.5 meters must be registered.
