Procedure details

Interchangeable license plates can be issued for motor vehicles designed and built for passenger transport with a maximum of eight seats in addition to the driver's seat (category M1), motorcycles and light four-wheeled motor vehicles (category L vehicles) and trailers up to 750 kg maximum permissible mass (category O1), e.g. two passenger cars, or a passenger car and a motorhome, or two motorcycles, or two light trailers, but not two vehicles of different categories, e.g. a passenger car and a motorcycle.

One or both of the vehicles registered with interchangeable license plates can also be classic cars. The letter H of the classic car license plate is then affixed to the vehicle-related part of the interchangeable license plate. The same applies to vehicles that are allowed to carry an E license plate. The restriction to the same license plate sizes ensures that the proper prescribed illumination of the rear license plates is guaranteed.

The interchangeable license plate consists of two parts: a part that remains on the vehicle and an attachable additional part that authorizes a vehicle for use on the road. The identification numbers of a variable license plate are identical except for the last digit. The last digit of the vehicle's identification number is affixed to the vehicle-related part of the license plate. The remaining part of the identification number of the variable license plate is applied to the interchangeable part.

The prerequisite is that the vehicles fall into the same vehicle class and license plates of the same dimensions can be used on the vehicles.

With the e-license plate, you can use specially marked parking spaces or drive on streets approved for this purpose. The vehicle must be a purely electric vehicle or meet special requirements as a hybrid vehicle.
