Procedure details

The survey of passively fished waste takes place annually. It is an official survey of companies, corporations, institutions and authorities. If you collect or dispose of the following waste, you will receive a written request from the responsible State Statistical Office:

  • Waste from fishing gear
  • passively fished waste

You must provide information on how much waste you have collected and disposed of in a given year.

There is a legal obligation to provide information for this survey. The owners or managers of the companies, corporations and institutions or the authorities are obliged to provide information.

Reporting period and time of survey

The information must be provided for each reporting year. The survey is repeated annually. You will only receive the request to participate in the survey in the year following the reporting year.

Contents of the survey

You must provide the following information for the survey of passively fished waste:

  • Type and quantity of waste that you collected or disposed of in the reporting year
    • Waste from fishing gear
    • Passively fished waste
  • Type of disposal

How are the results of the survey used?

The results form the basis for national reporting in accordance with the EU directives on single-use plastic products and port reception facilities. The EU requires detailed evidence of the disposal of passively fished waste and fishing gear. Fishing gear contributes intensively to marine pollution if it ends up in the sea after use or is even deliberately disposed of at sea.
