Procedure details

Employees' circumstances change constantly over the course of their working lives. This has an impact on working life. The need for flexible working conditions is becoming ever greater, not least due to social change and demographic developments. The employer wants to support civil servants in their respective situations. For this reason, Bavarian civil service law offers a wide range of options for flexible working hours.

Family leave (Art. 89 BayBG)

Civil servants with pay are granted leave without pay upon request, provided there are no compelling official interests to the contrary, if they are actually caring for at least one child under the age of 18 (from 01.09.2027: 14 years) or another relative in need of care according to a medical opinion. The duration of a family policy leave of absence is limited to 17 years. Civil servants are entitled to benefits during family leave.

Further information on the requirements, options and legal consequences of a leave of absence can be found in the brochure "Teilzeitbeschäftigung, Beurlaubung und Altersteilzeit für Beamtinnen und Beamte des Freistaats Bayern".

The application for leave of absence must be submitted to the employer.
