If you are developing an artistically outstanding program-filling documentary film project, you can apply for material development funding under certain conditions.
The Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM) supports the development of production-ready project descriptions for documentary film projects with up to EUR 20,000.
As a director of cinema documentaries, the funding is intended to help you to better elaborate and develop your material. It also helps you to find financing and production partners for further project development and subsequent realization of your film project.
The funding focuses on ambitious cinema projects with an innovative and individual approach to realization.
You submit your application to the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM). You are not entitled to funding.

Once the project has been completed, you must provide evidence of what you have spent the funding on. To do this, you must keep all invoices and receipts relating to the project costs.
If you receive funding, you must keep the BKM informed about your production process.

If you are financing the project yourself, you do not need a production company. In this case, an independent dramaturge is required to support your project. You must prove this with a corresponding letter of intent.

The FFF Bayern is responsible for film funding. It supports the production of cinema and television films. Other areas of funding include screenplay, new talent, distribution and sales support, film theaters, series, VR, international co-productions and visual effects.
If you want to digitise historically important or valuable German films, you can apply for funding under certain conditions.
If you as a film distributor release an artistically ambitious film in cinemas, you can receive funding under certain conditions.
If you produce full-length children's films and short films with a significant German cultural impact, you can apply for funding.
