Procedure details

A birth abroad can be subsequently certified upon application to the relevant registry office if the person born abroad has German citizenship at the time of application. The parents of the child, the child itself, its spouse, partner or children are entitled to apply.

The registry office in whose jurisdiction the person born abroad has or last had their place of residence or habitual abode is responsible for notarization. If this does not give rise to jurisdiction, the registry office in whose jurisdiction the applicant has or last had their domicile or habitual residence shall certify the birth. If this does not result in jurisdiction either, the registry office I in Berlin will notarize the birth.
