A death abroad can be subsequently notarized upon application to the competent registry office if the person who died abroad was a German citizen.
The registry office in whose jurisdiction the person who died abroad had their last place of residence or habitual abode is responsible for notarization. If this does not give rise to jurisdiction, the registry office in whose jurisdiction the applicant has or last had their domicile or habitual residence will notarize the death. If this does not result in jurisdiction either, the registry office I in Berlin will notarize the death.

The death of a person must be reported to the registry office in whose jurisdiction they died. Funeral homes, hospitals, retirement and nursing homes and other institutions are obliged to notify the registry office.
In the event of death, relatives of a deceased person can apply for a death certificate.
