Procedure details

bavarikon is the portal for art, culture and regional studies of the Free State of Bavaria. It digitally presents art, culture and knowledge treasures from various institutions in Bavaria. The Bavarian State Library is responsible for operating the portal and managing the funds earmarked for bavarikon. The data is hosted by the Leibniz Supercomputing Center of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences and Humanities. bavarikon is not a closed service, but is constantly gaining new cultural objects as content and cultural institutions as partners. A council, which meets every six months and in which various Bavarian cultural institutions are represented, decides on the inclusion of new content in the portal.

Purpose

The Free State of Bavaria is pursuing several goals with bavarikon. On the one hand, the portal serves as a showcase for Bavarian culture. Secondly, as a central platform, bavarikon is a decisive infrastructure measure for the digitization of cultural assets. bavarikon enables Bavarian cultural institutions to participate in innovations (e.g. 3D digitization).

Object

The digitization of objects that are of outstanding importance for Bavaria's cultural identity can be funded. bavarikon pursues a basic concept based on the following three pillars. Digitized are

  • high-quality top-quality items that are to be systematically and comprehensively recorded,
  • special, in-depth indexed and editorially processed key topics and
  • nationwide cross-cutting topics, such as language, places, monuments, people, etc.

Recipients of funding

Cultural institutions based in the Free State of Bavaria (e.g. museums, archives, libraries, historical associations, research institutions, etc.) are eligible to apply.

Eligible costs

Funding is available for expenditure on digitization and indexing.

Restoration measures or the procurement of scanners are not eligible for funding.

  • The final pre-application is submitted to the State Ministry of Science and the Arts via the bavarikon office.
  • The bavarikon Council decides whether the project is suitable for bavarikon.
  • The Chairman of the bavarikon Council informs the applicant of the decision and, in the event of a positive vote, invites the applicant to submit a main application.
