Procedure details

Individuals who have been involved with a voluntary aid organization over a long period of time can be honored with a state award - the relief organization badge of honor.

The State Minister of the Interior, for Sport and Integration awards the relief organization badge of honour as a service award

  • as a second-class badge of honor for 25 years,
  • as a first class decoration for 40 years and
  • as a Grand Decoration of Honor for 50 years of active service

with a voluntary aid organization that is obliged to provide disaster relief and is involved in rescue services

  • Bavarian Red Cross (BRK),
  • Arbeiter-Samariter-Bund Landesverband Bayern e.V. (ASB),
  • Johanniter-Unfall-Hilfe e.V. Landesverband Bayern (JUH),
  • Malteser Hilfsdienst e.V. Bayern (MHD),
  • Deutsche Lebens-Rettungs-Gesellschaft Landesverband Bayern e.V. (DLRG) or
  • the Federal Agency for Technical Relief Bavarian State Association (THW)

awarded.

The period of service as an active member of one of the aforementioned organizations (BRK, ASB, JUH, MHD, DLRG and THW) is regarded as creditable service time. Periods of service with non-Bavarian organizations can be credited if they can be proven.

Active service also includes work in the training service, administrative service, equipment maintenance and service supervision. However, full-time employment with the organizations does not count as creditable service. The period of service must have been completed without significant interruption; military service or a proven period of illness do not count as an interruption.

The service awards are presented by the district administrators in rural districts and by the mayors in independent cities in a manner appropriate to the occasion. They may also be presented by a person appointed by them.

A badge of honor may not be awarded as long as the person has an unrestricted entry in the Federal Central Criminal Register due to a legally binding conviction.

Proposals for the awarding of a service award must be submitted to the relevant district administrative authority by the organization for which the recipient performs voluntary service.

Proposals for the awarding of a service award must be submitted twice a year, on April 1 and October 1, or in good time before the planned date of presentation.
