Procedure details

The State Office for Health and Food Safety is responsible for infection control, including

  • Collecting and evaluating information on risks and defense options for pathogens and epidemics
  • Providing specialist advice to the public health service on the prevention and control of communicable diseases (including risk situations caused by pathogens that can be used for bioterrorism) and the implementation of hygiene measures
  • Support and expert advice for nursing homes and facilities for people with disabilities in the implementation of infection prevention and hygiene measures by the nursing home control center
  • Exchange of information and coordination with ministries and authorities as well as participation in committees, working groups and networks at state, federal and international level
  • Evidence-based education and information for the population on issues relating to infection control and the risk assessment of infectious agents and infectious diseases
  • Training doctors, in particular health authorities, in infection control issues
  • Ensuring laboratory capacities for monitoring infectious agents ("surveillance") in the Bavarian population (e.g. influenza surveillance)
  • Compiling, processing and evaluating the data submitted by the health authorities on notifiable diseases and pathogens in Bavaria and forwarding it to the Robert Koch Institute in accordance with the requirements of the Infection Protection Act
  • Carrying out laboratory tests for reportable pathogens in accordance with the Infection Protection Act
  • Carrying out outbreak investigations in accordance with the Infection Protection Act
  • Ensuring the infrastructure and logistics for emergency response measures (e.g. ensuring sufficient laboratory capacity for testing for pathogens of rapidly spreading infectious diseases and bioterrorism.
