Procedure details

Pharmaceutical training comprises three examination sections (state examination).

The first section of the pharmaceutical examination is a written examination and covers the following subjects

  • I. General, inorganic and organic chemistry,
  • II. fundamentals of pharmaceutical biology and human biology,
  • III. fundamentals of physics, physical chemistry and dosage forms,
  • IV. Fundamentals of pharmaceutical analysis.

The examination takes place over four days in the above order. It lasts two and a half hours on each of the first two days and two hours on each of the following two days.

The second section of the pharmaceutical examination covers the following subjects

  • I. Pharmaceutical/medical chemistry,
  • II. pharmaceutical biology,
  • III. pharmaceutical technology/biopharmacy,
  • IV. Pharmacology and Toxicology
  • V. Clinical Pharmacy.

The examination is conducted orally on five examination days, which are usually immediately consecutive, with interruptions of up to a maximum of eight days. The examinations are taken before an examination board appointed by the State Examination Office at the university at which you are enrolled.

The third examination section is taken orally before an examination board whose members are appointed by the State Examination Office of the Government of Upper Bavaria.

The examination dates are set by the State Examination Office in consultation with the members of the examination board.

The examination lasts between half an hour and one hour for each candidate and covers both pharmaceutical practice and special areas of law for pharmacists. The examination material is set out in the licensing regulations.

If the candidate has demonstrated the knowledge required to practice the profession of pharmacist, the third examination section is deemed to have been passed. The candidate will be informed on the day of the examination whether he or she has passed the examination. A transcript of the examination will be prepared. Upon passing the third section, the State Examination Office will issue a certificate for the third section of the pharmaceutical examination and the entire pharmaceutical examination.

  • First section of the Pharmaceutical Examination (originals will not be returned; please submit certified copies of supporting documents):
    • Birth certificate
    • Marriage certificate for married persons
    • Proof of school entrance qualification
      (in the case of certificates acquired outside Germany, a certificate of recognition from the certificate recognition office must be submitted)
    • Proof of clinical traineeship
    • Current certificate of enrolment
    • Certificates of regular and successful participation in the courses in subject areas A to D (certificates) - an overview of the certificates to be submitted by university can be found in the announcement for the first section (see under "Legal basis").
  • Second section of the Pharmaceutical Examination (originals will not be returned; please submit certified copies of supporting documents):
    • Current certificate of enrolment
    • Certificates of regular and successful participation in the courses in subject areas E to I (certificates) - an overview of the certificates to be submitted by university can be found in the announcement for the second section.
    • Certificate of the prescribed compulsory elective subject letter K (Schein)
      (a certificate of practical training alone is not accepted, please have a Schein issued)
  • Third section of the Pharmaceutical Examination (originals will not be returned; please submit certified copies of supporting documents):
    • Certificate of registration of main residence
      (decides on the examination venue Munich or Regensburg - see announcement under "Legal basis" ) and must be available at the time of application)
    • Proof of practical training
      (practical training outside Germany must be recognised - see "Related topics")
    • Proof of participation in the accompanying teaching events

The application for admission to an examination section must be submitted in writing in the form prescribed by the State Examination Office.

The applicant will receive information on legal remedies with the notification in the event of non-admission or failure.
