Description
The Cross of Merit is awarded for exceptional service to the fire service or in the fight against fires or other emergencies. Strict criteria must be applied when evaluating nominations for the award. The award is generally presented only once every two years.
The Cross is generally presented to the recipient by the District President, along with a lapel pin, a miniature version of the ribbon clasp, and the certificate of award.
Requirements
Nominees must have rendered outstanding service to the fire service or in fighting fires or other emergencies; long-term membership in a fire department, however, is not sufficient.
The Steckkreuz may not be awarded as long as the person has an entry in the Federal Central Register—based on an unrestricted disclosure—resulting from a final conviction. Furthermore, those to be honored must be deemed worthy of an award based on their overall conduct.
Proceedings
The state governments request that the district administrative authorities submit proposals to them for the awarding of the Steckkreuz. After consulting with the relevant chairperson of the district fire department association, they select suitable proposals and submit them to the State Ministry of the Interior, Sports, and Integration.
In addition, the Bavarian State Fire Department Association (Landesfeuerwehrverband Bayern e. V.) may also submit up to two nominations for the award of the Steckkreuz directly to the State Ministry of the Interior, Sports, and Integration.
