The Internal Market Information System (IMI) is a secure multilingual online network that facilitates the exchange of information between public authorities involved in the practical implementation of EU law. It allows national, regional and local authorities to communicate quickly and easily with authorities in other EU countries.
Competent authorities can use IMI to send information requests and alerts and also process applications for a European Professional Card, provided this is permitted under data protection law. Contact persons in foreign authorities can be easily found via the system. A major advantage is that IMI enables the affiliated bodies to communicate in their own language, as pre-translated forms are available in all official EU languages. In addition, free texts can be translated using a (machine) translation function. The system was developed by the EU Commission in cooperation with the member states and is operated and financed by the Commission.
The government of the Upper Palatinate assumes the tasks of coordinator and support for IMI centrally for Bavaria. Authorities and other public bodies in Bavaria that require access to IMI must apply to the coordination office of the Government of Upper Palatinate.
Inclusion in IMI by the government of the Upper Palatinate can only take place if the respective body has to implement legal acts for which the use of IMI is mandatory or at least permitted.
