Procedure details

The Bavarian Virtual University (vhb) is a joint institution supported by the 13 universities, 19 universities of applied sciences and four art colleges in Bavaria. It supports its member universities by promoting demand-oriented online courses. In this way, it improves teaching and study conditions throughout Bavaria, with students who are dependent on flexibility in terms of location and time benefiting in particular. The vhb promotes lifelong learning with open, free online courses. All courses have been developed by professors at Bavarian universities and are subject to continuous quality assurance.

CLASSIC vhb courses are designed to be credited towards university studies at the supporting universities. They enable the acquisition of ECTS points. Students of the sponsoring universities can use these courses free of charge, regardless of their subject. Around 560 supervised courses from 15 subject groups are available.

The vhb repository currently offers a pool of more than 2,400 blended learning units. Teachers can flexibly integrate the SMART vhb learning units into their classroom courses, and students can also use them for self-study. In addition, the repository offers the opportunity to provide and use Open Educational Resources (OER), freely available educational materials created at Bavarian universities.

OPEN vhb courses make university knowledge on a wide range of topics freely accessible to all interested parties. More than 140 courses are available. Enrolment at a university is just as unnecessary as a university entrance qualification. The courses can be completed at your own pace, regardless of semester limits. Most courses offer a certificate of attendance after successful completion of tests. ECTS points and supervision are not provided.

Students who are enrolled at a vhb member university can participate in CLASSIC vhb courses free of charge. Other persons can use these for a fee, whereby admission requirements may have to be met.

There are no admission requirements for OPEN vhb.

The repository for SMART vhb learning units is available to teachers and students at the host universities.

Further information can be found on the website of the Bavarian Virtual University (see "Further links"). You can also obtain information from the office of the Bavarian Virtual University (for contact details, see "Responsible for you").

Students who are enrolled at a vhb member university can participate in CLASSIC vhb courses free of charge. Other people can use these courses for a fee.
