The House of Bavarian History has been part of the State Ministry of Science and the Arts since October 6, 1998.
The tasks of the House of Bavarian History are
These tasks are primarily fulfilled through exhibitions in all parts of the state, publications, lectures, film documentaries, the establishment of a media archive on Bavarian history and, since June 2019, the new museum in Regensburg. The Bavarian state government had commissioned the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte to realize the museum in Regensburg, to create the scientific concept and to build up a collection for this museum.
The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte has been based in Augsburg since September 1993. In June 2019, the Museum am Regensburger Donaumarkt was added as a separate exhibition venue, and since October 2020, the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte has had its own media education project center, the Bavariathek.
The most important task of the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte is the preparation and realization of cultural-historical exhibitions, in particular the Bavarian State Exhibitions, which take place every year and alternately in all Bavarian regions. All epochs and subject areas of Bavarian history are included. The second flagship is the museum on Regensburg's Donaumarkt: in addition to the permanent exhibition "How Bavaria became a Free State and what makes it so special", the exhibition house offers a multimedia show and a large special exhibition area for changing exhibitions and events.
In addition, the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte organizes the "Bavarian Exhibition" format on specific topics as a smaller exhibition format, which can also be organized as a travelling exhibition.
All exhibitions, state, Bavarian and permanent exhibitions in the museum, are linked to the Bavarian school programs through various educational programs. The Bavariathek on Regensburg's Donaumarkt, right next to the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte, is the media education project center that teaches media skills and Bavarian history: In programs for all types of schools and age groups, pupils deal with historical topics and modern media. The results - virtual exhibitions, films or podcasts - expand the online offerings of the Bavariathek.
The media archive of the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte collects image data and sources on Bavarian history. In addition to photographic prints, negatives, postcards and video films etc., posters and other printed material on Bavarian history of the 20th century are also collected. The media archive is also the repository for the filmed interviews with contemporary witnesses, which the Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte is conducting as part of a separate project.
The Haus der Bayerischen Geschichte is the publisher of publications on Bavarian history and culture. The series of catalogs and volumes of essays on the exhibitions are scholarly in nature and deal with topics from history, art history and ethnology. The regularly published "HDBG Magazine" continues the "Edition Bayern" series: modern and contemporary, historically sound and entertaining. The focus is particularly on the topics of the House of Bavarian History in Regensburg.
