According to the Bavarian Archives Act, it is the responsibility of the municipalities to ensure that their documents are archived. Archiving not only ensures the continuity of the administration, but also serves as an indispensable and irreplaceable basis for research into the past.
To fulfill this task, the non-state archives are provided with a volunteer archive keeper, who is appointed by the Directorate General of the Bavarian State Archives in agreement with the district.
The district archivist advises the archivists of the municipalities on all archiving issues, on the establishment of a municipal archive or the viewing and selection of existing material in individual consultations and at the annual meeting of archivists. He reports to the superior authorities on the state of the municipal archives and provides an overview of the sources available for scientific and private historical research.
If you would like to use or view the archive material stored in a municipal archive, you can apply for this.
The municipalities, counties and districts are responsible for archiving their own records.
